Happy Orthodox Easter

The Origin of Orthodox Easter

In 325 AD, the Council of Nicaea decided that Easter would be observed on the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the March equinox.

The reason for the two different calendars actually came from a miscalculation of astronomy.

The primary goal of creating the Gregorian calendar was to alter the time of Easter.

According to history.com, “In 1582, when Pope Gregory XIII introduced his Gregorian calendar, Europe adhered to the Julian calendar, first implemented by Julius Caesar in 46 B.C. Since the Roman emperor’s system miscalculated the length of the solar year by 11 minutes, the calendar had since fallen out of sync with the seasons. This concerned Gregory because it meant that Easter, traditionally observed on March 21, fell further away from the spring equinox with each passing year.”

Eid al-Fitr (Festival of Breaking Fast)

Eid al-Fitr is the Muslim festival marking the end of the fast of Ramadan.

Celebrations  include Eid prayers, festive meals, social gatherings,  visiting the graves of relatives, charitable and gift-giving.

All celebrations serve as a way for the community to show their gratitude to Allah after fasting and reflecting during Ramadan.

Wishing all those who celebrate a blessed Eid!

Good Friday

Good Friday is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus on this day more than 2000 years ago, Jesus died for the sins of the world.

Jesus was flogged, tortured and forced to carry a cross to the site of his own execution where he would be crucified under Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea.

Jesus led a path of service and love; even in his death, it was the salvation of others.

Wishing all those that celebrate a blessed Good Friday!

Passover

Happy Passover! Passover is considered the Festival of Freedom, which is an important Jewish holiday.

It commemorates the Biblical story of Exodus — where God freed the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.

This year, it is April 5 to April 12.
