OMW Ontario Municipal Workers Committee AREA 8
OMW Local Executives,
I hope this message finds you well as we kick off the upcoming summer months. My
previous email indicated a potential Area 8 meeting for the end of June. We have set a definite
date for July 16th 2026. I hope to encourage all of the Locals to participate by having a delegate
provide a brief update on any relevant local activities, education, campaigns, and municipal
election insight.
The municipal election for Ontario is set to take place October 26, 2026. Advance ballots
will open approximately four weeks previous, varying by location. OMW-CUPE Ontario is
striving to have active member engagement during this municipal campaign.
As this being my inaurgural Area 8 meeting, I look forward to meeting all the Local
Executives in the coming months. I will be making an effort to attend any of the local, district or
sector meetings during the next few months leading up to the election in an effort to engage and
correspond with members in each of the Locals. There shall be an agenda and RSVP message
link sent early next week.
Initially I had sent communication using area8rep@gmail.com, I will be moving forward
with area8rep@cupeomw.com for all further communication. I truly appreciate your participation
and commitment to all the members in Area 8 and beyond.

MMIWG2s Day
The MMIWG2S movement focuses on ending the disproportionate violence faced by Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people. Indigenous women are four times more likely than non-Indigenous women to be victims of violence, and they represent 16% of all female homicide victims in Canada despite making up only 4.3% of the population afn.ca. The movement seeks to address systemic racism, colonial legacies, and social inequities that contribute to these high rates of violence www.mmiwg-ffada.ca.
